In the wake of the 2022–23 energy crisis, Ofgem warned that Britain faced a significant risk of gas shortages due to European supply pressures following the war in Ukraine. While the UK has never relied heavily on Russian gas, disruptions to continental supply chains can still ripple through our market and affect both price and availability.

Fast forward to winter 2025–26, and supply security remains a live concern. In January 2025, UK gas storage levels were reported to be 26% lower than the year before, leaving the system with less than a week’s total reserves. If cold weather coincides with high demand, the grid could face added pressure, potentially pushing prices up and increasing the risk of disruption.

The National Energy System Operator (NESO) has contingency plans in place to minimise this risk, but for businesses, the message is clear: prepare now so you can stay resilient whatever winter brings.

Why Gas Supply Still Matters for Electricity

The UK’s electricity system remains heavily reliant on gas-fired generation to balance supply and demand, especially during winter peaks. If gas supply tightens, it can push electricity prices higher and add pressure to the grid. Discussions have taken place about decoupling gas and electricity prices to reduce knock-on effects, although no such changes have yet been implemented.

How to Prepare Your Business for a Winter Power Outage

Even if the risk of blackouts is low, having a plan means you can act quickly and protect both your people and operations.

1. Create a Clear Response Plan

Your outage plan should outline:

  • A designated safe area for employees and customers.
  • Key contacts, including your Distribution Network Operator (DNO).
  • Step-by-step shutdown and restart actions for critical equipment.
  • Internal and external communication protocols so everyone stays informed.

2. Prioritise Safety

In the event of an outage:

  • Ensure emergency lighting is functional.
  • Keep exit routes clear and secure.
  • In customer-facing environments, maintain safety and security until power returns.

3. Power Down Safely

  • Switch off electrical equipment to prevent damage from a sudden restart.
  • Do not attempt repairs unless you are qualified. Contact your DNO or facilities team.
  • Only power back up once you have confirmation it is safe.

4. Review Your Business Continuity Measures

  • Consider whether you could operate remotely if the site loses power.
  • Assess if portable generators or UPS systems could protect critical assets.
  • Keep back-up copies of key data and ensure systems are tested regularly.

5. Monitor Market and Grid Updates

  • Follow Ofgem, NESO, and your supplier for winter energy updates.
  • Be aware of any voluntary demand-reduction requests during peak periods.

The Bottom Line

Gas shortages are not inevitable, and the UK’s energy system is better prepared than in previous years. However, low storage levels and a volatile global market mean winter

always carries some risk. By taking a few practical steps now, you can reduce your exposure to disruption and avoid unnecessary costs.
